Laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery in which a thin, long flexible tube with an attached light is used rather than an open surgical procedure to examine the functioning of a specific organ or area of the body. This thin, long tube is inserted through a keyhole and contains a tiny camera that sends images to a video monitor as it moves. Laparoscopy is the procedure, and the thin, lighted instrument is known as a laparoscope. Other surgical instruments inserted through the incision site to surgically cure/remove the problem may be used to assist the laparoscopy in some cases. Laparoscopy provides detailed, realistic information about the patient's current condition and aids in the development of a targeted treatment or surgical plan. Minor ailments are also treated with laparoscopy. As a result, a laparoscopy can be used both diagnostically and surgically. Laparoscopy is an excellent procedure to use when the exact nature and severity of the problem are unknown. The procedure is minimally invasive and requires up to four small incisions, one of which must enter the body; these incisions must be no more than 0.5 inches long. After removing the carbon dioxide from the targeted organ, the surgeon will remove all instruments, stitch the incisions, and bandage the area.
